What bad React tests measure by accident
A weak React assessment usually measures speed under artificial pressure, familiarity with one library setup, or the ability to recite hook trivia. None of those reliably predicts whether someone can keep a production frontend sane.
That gets worse in the AI coding era. If a candidate can prompt their way into boilerplate quickly, your assessment has to distinguish generated output from actual engineering judgment.
What a useful React judgment test should ask instead
Give candidates a believable UI problem with one or two tradeoffs that matter. Ask them where state should live, whether an effect is justified, how they would separate server and client work, or how they would test interruption and failure paths.
- Use repair prompts, not blank-page coding prompts, so the candidate has to judge an existing diff.
- Score explanation quality, not just the final code shape.
- Prefer one narrow realistic problem over a giant take-home that mostly measures unpaid time.
- Ask for the test they would write before asking for the code they would type.
A simple scoring rubric that survives scale
The cleanest rubric scores four things: state ownership, effect judgment, async correctness, and explanation clarity. That gives you a way to separate a fluent React engineer from someone who only knows surface syntax.
If you need a fifth category, use boundary judgment for Next.js or React Server Components. That area has become a reliable differentiator because many developers still blur responsibilities there.
How to keep the content maintenance cost reasonable
You do not need a giant question bank on day one. A smaller set of evergreen prompts works if each one measures judgment instead of memorization.
That is why a fluency index can stay maintainable for a solo founder. The moat is not hundreds of trivia questions. It is a smaller archive of realistic scenarios with a clear explanation layer and a scoring lens teams can trust.
